Heat treatment is a phytosanitary process in which all wood packaging materials must comply in international shipments. The process “phytosanitary” eliminates pests including Asian long-horned beetles, Nematode to prevent the travelling from one nation to another, as they pose a great threat to forests and crops.
The International Plant Protection Convention mandates that wood packaging used in
International trade must be treated to guard against the distribution of unwanted pests, which is defined in ISPM 15.
All wood packaging for export purposes must be placed in a chamber where the moisture of wood is reduced by applying heat until it reaches a temperature of 56 C for minimum of 30 minutes. This can be done either before or after the manufacturing takes place. Once the desired temperatures have been met, the pallets can be exported or pallets can be manufactured with the treated lumber.
